Food stamps for African Americans and others who need assistance is a great program to turn to if you need help paying for groceries. The more you learn about the program, the better position you will be to apply for the program and get approved.

The Food Stamp Program in America was first started in 1939, with additional programs for it that were tried out in the 1960s. The goal of the program has always been to help provide people with a way to obtain food if they are struggling financially. It helps ensure food needs are being met, so that people don’t go hungry in this country. It has been known as and called food stamps for decades, but that is not technically what the program is called anymore.

During the Obama years, the name of the official Food Stamp Program was changed to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Today it is called SNAP, but most people still refer to it as food stamps. President Obama changed the name of the program so that it would help to eliminate some of the stigma that surrounded people getting food stamps from the federal government.

How Food Stamps Works

African Americans and others who are approved for food stamps will get help purchasing their food each month. There is no limit to how long you can receive help through this program. As long as you continue to qualify for the program you can keep getting the food purchasing assistance.

Once you are approved for foods stamps you will receive a plastic card that looks like a debit or credit card. Each month, the federal government will electronically add funds to the card so that you can then use it to pay for your groceries. You can usually use it as a payment source at grocery stores, small convenience stores, and even some farmers markets, depending on the state where you live.

How to Qualify for Food Stamps

To qualify for food stamps you have to meet the following qualifications:

  • Meet the low income requirements set forth by the government. For example, a family of four cannot exceed a monthly gross income of $3,250.
  • Be a citizen of the United States or be a legal citizen. The program is open to those who live in U.S. territories a well, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Not have more than a limited amount of assets. For example, you will not likely be approved for food stamps if you have a bank account that has $10,000 in it. You will need to declare your assets and be under a certain amount to be approved for the program.

Those who are approved for foods stamps will get the monthly benefit for as long as they need it and meet the above criteria. The amount that you will receive each month is determined by how many people are in the household who are dependents.

Here is a breakdown of what an average amount of food stamps will be each month, if you are approved for the program:

  • Households with one person receive a maximum amount of $291.
  • Households with 2 people receive a maximum amount of $535.
  • Households with 3 people receive a maximum amount of $766.
  • Households with 4 people receive a maximum amount of $973.

These amounts may change slightly, but those are around what you can expect for a family of each size. The more people that are in the family household, the more the benefit will be each month. As children grow up and move out, the benefit will be lowered to the new household ratio amount. This is because there is then less people in the household.
