Help for African Americans Who are Veterans

There are millions of veterans who need assistance programs, for whatever reason. They may struggle financially due to injuries and disabilities, or because they can’t find jobs that pay enough. The good news is that there are program that provide help for African Americans who are veterans. Knowing where to find the programs can go a long way toward ensuring that their basic needs are being met.

While veterans are able to apply to all low income programs in the country, there are some additional programs they can apply for that are only open to those who are veterans. Applying for these helpful programs can help people get the assistance they need to pay their bills, find affordable housing, obtain free food, and much more.

Programs Providing Help

You can apply for all programs you feel qualified below. There is no limit to how many of the programs you can apply for. These programs may also be able to refer you to other helpful local programs that they know about. The more programs you contact for help, the better position you will be in to get your needs met.

211 – This organization can provide you with local referrals to program that can help with your situation, no matter what it may be. All you have to do is call 211 and tell them you are a veteran that is in need of assistance programs. They will use their database to find local programs that will help with what you need assistance for. Their referral service is free to use and open to anyone in the country. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – This agency of the federal government helps people around the country with housing issues. Those who need housing assistance can contact the HUD office in their state to get help. Every state has a HUD office and they are tasked with helping the people in that state with finding affordable housing, helping to pay rent and avoid foreclosure, pay house repair bills, and provide free weatherization services. U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs – This agency is part of the federal government. Their mission is to help veterans with a variety of issues. This agency provides VA benefits and healthcare for those who are veterans in the United States. Some of the issues they provide help with include health care, disability, pensions, education and training, housing assistance, burials and memorials, life insurance, careers and employment, and more. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – This program will provide those who qualify with free food each month. Those who are approved will be able to use a government issued debit card to pay for their groceries each month. This program used to be called food stamps and is still what most people know it as. To qualify for SNAP, you have to have a low income and be a U.S. citizen or a legal non-citizen. There is no limit to how long you can receive help through SNAP. As long as you continue to qualify for the help you can keep receiving the assistance. The amount you receive each month is determined by how many dependents you have in your home. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – Families in the country that need financial help may be able to get it through TANF. This government-funded program will provide those who qualify with cash each month. The cash can be used for paying bills, going to the doctor, housing, car expenses, etc. The amount that you receive each month depends on the number of your dependents. This program is for those who have at least one minor child in the home that they are providing for. Those who do not have that may be able to get cash benefits through a General Assistance program. Not all states have the General Assistance program, so you will need to see if your state does. There is a lifetime maximum of five years that you can get help through this program. Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) – Those who need help with paying for their monthly energy bills can apply for this program. The program is funded through the federal government. They will help people pay for their energy bills, sending the funds directly to the energy provider on your behalf. Government Loans – Veterans who are looking for loans may be able to get one through the federal government. They offer a variety of loans for veterans, including for things like purchasing a home, starting a business, etc. Veterans are often able to qualify for better interest rates than non-veterans. NAACP – This organization focuses on helping African Americans. They offer a variety of helpful programs, including scholarships, legal aid, internships, and help with civil issues. The organization has been around for many years and has helped a lot of people. They are a good option if you are looking for help, feedback, legal advice and more. In addition to these resources, be sure to check with your local churches to see how they can provide help for African Americans. There are churches around the country and they have a mission of helping people in the community who need assistance. They do not usually require you to be religious to get help through them.
